Why did the Whitechapel murders attract so much attention in 1888? During this time it was not uncommon to see prostitutes walking the streets around Whitechapel and it was a risky business. There had been several attacks on prostitutes during the summer of 1888. There was something different about the Ripper murders that took place in this area, the sheer brutality of five prostitutes being killed over the space of more or less three months. These murders were different from others because of how badly mutilated most of the victims were left and there didn't appear to be any motive behind them. Friday August 31st 1888 at around 4 am, a dead woman was found lying in front of a stable yard.
