Why did William Herbert re-build a castle at Raglan? Raglan was built by William ap Thomas who was a minor landowner but when William Herbert inherited it and went from a quite wealthy man to a very wealthy man and became the most powerful person in the country behind the King, for this reason he had to modify his castle to represent his status and to offer himself a high level of protection while being impressive. The keep was already built when William Herbert inherited it but he replaced the fixed wooden bridge with a two-decker arched bridge. He also added the hexagonal apron wall around the keep because he was Welsh turned English so he didn't trust his workers and made it a castle within a castle so he could be protected during a rebellion.
