Why Did The West Open Up So Quickly After 1865? During the 1840's there was a dramatic movement and fashion towards emigrating to the Western states of the USA, such as California and Oregon. The movement began with the first pioneers around 1843, when 1000 people emigrated. It increased in 1845 when around5000 people moved. However, it wasn't until the late 1850's when a huge movement of 65,000 people emigrated. This number continued to dramatically increase until by 1865, the Western Frontier nearly ceased to exist, and the United States of America were almost united. This is due to several varying factors, all important in their own rights, yet inextricably linked, and thus all contributing to the rapid expansion of the west after 1865.
