Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 - 1778) Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born in 1712 in Geneva, Switzerland. His father Isaac, an unsuccessful watchmaker, brought him up alone. His mother died nine days after giving birth. Isaac abandoned him in 1722 to avoid conviction for fighting a duel. His aunt and uncle took over raising him from then on, but he did not enjoy their company as much. Rousseau ran away from Switzerland in 1728 when he was 16, after multiple years of apprenticeship to an engraver and then a notary. He became the secretary and later, lover to a wealthy catholic philanthropist, Baroness Françoise Louise de Warens. Rousseau converted to Catholicism as a result, which ensured the completion of his education. He acquired the skills to make a living as a tutor, composer, playwright, musician and writer, to produce his life's work. In 1742 Rousseau moved to Paris in order to present the Académie des...
