THE BOER WAR * 1899-1902 * Fought between the British and the Boers in South Africa * War resulted over conflicts over land as the Boers wanted their independence. * On the 31 May 1902 the Boers surrendered and the Treaty of Vereeniging was signed. CAUSES There were two Boer Wars but it is the second one which began in 1899 which is most commonly referred to as the Boer War. In the 19th century South Africa was divided into four separate republics. The Boers existed in two main republics; the South African Republic and the Orange Free State. The British wanted to unify the whole of South Africa under the British flag but the Boers wanted to maintain their nationality. This created a conflict between the British and the Boers. The origins of the war can be traced to the discovery of the rich gold field in Witwatersrand in 1886 It lured thousands of miners...
