Styal Mill Question 2 The interior of the Apprentice house today bears very little resemblance to what it looked like in the 19th Century. Does this mean it is of no value as evidence of how apprentices lived in the early 19th Century? (7) The apprentice house bears very little resemblance now to what it looked like in the 19th Century. This is because the house has had many different uses between when it stopped being an apprentice house in1847 (due to new child protection laws) and being bought by the National Trust in 1939. We can therefore conclude that because there is a loss of historical evidence and also half of the house is now privately owned meaning the layout has to be changed somewhat, that the house is of now value in establishing how the apprentices lived.
