Mr.Jenkins Jack the Ripper Coursework Describe Law and Order in London in the late 19th Century Law and Order in the late 19th century was not as it is today. Crimes were much worse then, then they are today. There was a new police force at the time; they were the Metropolitan Police Force, who were established in 1829. Though they were the new police force on the block, they were poorly equipped and new so they weren't able to cope with new situations. However the force were in a disagreement about several issues about the police in society, the severe use of force and detection work such as prevention of murders, rapes etc. The Metropolitan Police Force was set up by the Home Secretary, Sir Robert Peel in 1829.
