Classical Civilisation Coursework 1 - In what ways was a Roman fort designed to fulfil its practical function effectively? Important buildings such as the strong room and the granary were built close to the centre of the fort, since this gave them more protection from thieves, raids and siege weaponry. The importance hierarchy of the buildings is easy to see, which also helps us see which buildings the Romans considered most vital to the fort. The granary was always found near to the centre of the fort, since this gave it more protection from the enemy. Since granaries were thatched, they were a large fire risk which is why they were kept away from anywhere flaming projectiles could hit the fort, to reduce the fire hazard.
