Collins and Lapierre open the book on New Year's Day, 1947 -- London awakes to filth of its own country. There were approximately two million plus Englishmen out of work, the price of food and drink were outlandishly high and many were homeless but despite the conditions of England's capital, she laid claim to over 300 countries. The reader is taken on a journey of significant events that lead to the independence of India. On the way I was introduced to many brilliant characters that shaped the history of India and have left a mark that is still evident. The decisions of Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, and Louis Mountbatten have influenced the lives and futures of millions of Indians.
