The purpose of this essay is to define Felipe Guaman Poma's purpose in the composition of his letter to Philip III by examining a few of his illustrative drawings that accompany his narrative. This is not an all-inclusive study. It will simply provide a brief assertion of Poma's intention, which will be revealed as a two folded purpose. Felipe Guaman Poma's The First New Chronicle and Good Government is a twelve-hundred page letter. Roughly a quarter of the letter consists of full-page drawings that narrate and complement the text. Poma presents a personalized version of a history and civilization of the Inca Empire, as well as an account of Spanish colonialism in Peru. A text written from an indigenous Andean perspective during the colonial period is very rare and for this reason, renders Poma's work as an important and unique literary work.
