Race riots were a massive problem in American cities in the late 1960s. They had numerous causes, such as the migration of Black Americans to northern cities, the segregation and discrimination they were exposed to by White Americans and the influence of many Black Leaders at that time. Additionally, the frustration felt by the Black Americans grew stronger at the slow progress of the Civil Rights movement and their concern that they were still being ignored by the white majority. From the early stages of the 20th century, leading up to the 1960s, over 6 million Black people migrated from the south to the north, believing that the north would be a place free from the humiliation of segregation.
