Describe the effects of the Blitz on everyday life in Britain. From September 1940 until May 1941, civilian and industrial targets in major British cities were subjected to a heavy aerial bombardment by the German Air Force. This affected the lives of the British people greatly. Large-scale death and destruction was just one effect of the Blitz. When Coventry was bombed in November 1940, most of the city centre was obliterated with 60,000 buildings being damaged. Three-quarters of factories in this industrial town and 4,300 homes were reduced to rubble. The large numbers of civilians that died overall (more than 40,000) meant that many were bereaved. Many families lost their main wage-earner and with no Social Security available often faced difficulties. The destruction of workplaces was commonplace and travelling to work through the rubble-littered streets was often very difficult. However, the overall effect on the economy was limited.
