Describe the effects of the Blitz on everyday life in Britain Megan Clary The Blitz had devastating effects on people in Britain and their everyday lives. The Blitz began on the 24th August 1940 when a German bomber accidentally hit London when he was aiming for military targets. Winston Churchill, the British prime minister, retaliated by ordering the bombing of Germany. Hitler was outraged and he ordered the bombing of London, which was bombed repeatedly for fifty seven nights and resulted in thousands of civilian deaths. Hitler thought that attacking the civilian population in this way would make the British public put pressure on their Government to end the war as soon as possible. This period was known as the Blitz, and it affected people's lives in many ways. One of the most significant effects of the Blitz was that thousands of people died through the bombings.
