India Coursework Between the periods of 1526 and 1757, the Mughals ruled most of India, apart from the Southern tip; this area was ruled by Hindu princes (Rajputs). The East India Company took over India from the Mughals by winning the battle of Plassey in 1757. The East India Company governed India but not in a fair way. Tension was building up between the British and the Indians due to the fact that the Indians did not like being treated in this manner. The spark of the mutiny was in 1857, when the Indian solders had bite gun cartridges greased with pork and beef. This triggered a reaction in both Hindu and Muslims as Muslims can't eat pork, and Hindus can't eat beef. The mutiny lasted for 14 months of the Indian trying to take over power from the British.
