Oliver Cromwell is one of English history's most controversial, enigmatic and well known figures. He was an original rebel, his fame rests on his leading a revolt against the monarchy and his attempts to turn Britain into a republic. Cromwell inspired the beginnings of a more democratic society but his methods were often brutal and bloody. This has led commentators and historians to interpret his character and motives in radically different ways. On the 400th anniversary of Oliver Cromwells birth, the arguments over whether he is a hero or a villain have been re-ignited. Special events around the country are being staged to commemorate his anniversary. In Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, a 17th century marketplace will be reconstructed this weekend.
