A Personal Investigation of Kidwelly Castle 1. What evidence is there that the castle had domestic purposes? Although many parts of Kidwelly castle are incomplete, there is still sufficient evidence that the castle was used for domestic purposes. For the castle to have been of any defensive use, it would have had to have been occupied 24 hours a day. this would have necessitated a basic level of domestic features, many of which can still be seen around the castle, but as time passed, more features were added, some even being unnecessary luxuries. As time progressed the purpose of the castle changed from a defensive stronghold, the general level of comfort inside the castle increased considerably. Situated in both the gatehouse towers and all four towers that form the wall walk around the inner ward are cellars. These rooms were dark, damp and cold. It is almost certain that these...
