Balloons Balloons by Sylvia Plath is one of the poems about childhood I chose to portray. This poem provides an insight to a child's thoughts. The world of fantasy all children believe in during the first phase of their life is symbolized by balloons in the poem. This other world is childish and typically idealistic, alien yet desirable. The child is playing balloons at Christmas. The season is symbolic of a time of peace and joy. It is often associated with fairytale beings such as santa claus and elves. This setting adds to the vibrant mood of the poem. The poet draws up a picture of a small lively room filled with a myriad of colours. The balloons mainly 'take up half the space' showing that the room is small. They are compared to oval soul-animals thus giving the room a sort of liveliness often associated with children.
