An Introduction to the Benefits and Detriments of Day Care Cognitive and emotional development is crucial in the early years. So new parents are going to have to think hard about returning to work or whether child care is going to be key in bringing up their offspring. The jury is still out on whether child care is beneficial or detrimental, however this introduction to studies and opinions of some of the world's most respected developmental psychologists, including some general facts, will hopefully set some minds at rest and help parents-to-be, and new parents, discover the best options for their child. One of the main benefits of day care is, of course, cognitive development. To prove that day care does help push forward the cognitive development of children we can look at a study by Burchinal, Lee and Ramney in 1989 which tested the IQ of children just before they started they...
