Advocacy in an Early Years Setting This essay attempts to explore how advocacy may be used in any early years setting. An advocate can be any individual who speaks in support for somebody else. This could be a friend, family member, lawyer, mediator or a colleague. An online dictionary describes the word advocate as 1. One that argues for a cause; a supporter or defender: an advocate of civil rights. 2. One that pleads in another's behalf; an intercessor: advocates for abused children and spouses. 3. Every individual can act as an advocate whether in professional support or support of a friend. Special training is not needed to be an advocate in most cases, just the ability to be able to communicate effectively in support of someone else.
