Health and Social Care Explored
Why Study GCSE Health and Social Care?
GCSE Health and Social Care is a broad based course including biology, psychology, PE and sociology. It would be a good start for anyone thinking of nursing or social work as a career, or for anyone planning on becoming a parent (hopefully not before the exam!).
GCSE Health and Social Care: What Will I Study?
GCSE Health and Social Care can be taken as a single or double award course. You'll cover the same areas, but in less depth if you take the single option. There are three areas covered by most exam boards:
Health, social care and early years provision. You'll look at the work of the different services of the care industry. You'll learn about different jobs and how people carry them out.
Promoting Health and Well-Being. You'll learn about keeping yourself and others healthy. You could draw up diet and exercise plans for people with different needs.
Personal Development and Relationships. This looks at how people change through their lives. You'll look at the needs of different age groups and how they can be supported in their development.
GCSE Health and Social Care is assessed by coursework and exam. A large part of your mark is based on your portfolio of coursework. Usually students gain some practical experience by visiting nurseries or care homes. You may have to report on child development by monitoring one child over several weeks.
GCSE Health and Social Care... What Comes Next?
A GCSE in Health and Social Care would be a good start if you're considering jobs in the care services like social work, nursing, care assistant or nursery nurse. If you want to continue studying there is A Level Health and Social Care or a range of BTEC courses in Caring, Early Years or Health Studies. Subjects covered in GCSE Health and Social Care also show up in biology, psychology, PE and sociology courses.
