In 1991 Redland Aggregates applied for planning permission to establish Europe's largest Superquarry to extract the aggregates for use in construction from the mountain Roineabhal The superquarry was going to be built near Lingerbay, Harris, Scotland is the southern part of the largest island of the Western Isles of Scotland or Outer Hebrides (The Outer Hebrides, comprise an island chain off the west coast of Scotland). Most of Harris is mountainous, with more than thirty peaks above 1000 ft. high. The plan would involve the removal of 10 million tonnes per year for 60 years (an average UK quarry extracts around 200,000 TPA) and the quarry would extend over an area of 459 hectares.
