TORNADO - NATURE'S MOST VIOLENT STORMS A tornado is a violently rotating column of air which is in contact with both cumulonimbus clouds or a cumulus cloud base and the surface of the Earth (which happens rarely). Although there are many different shapes and size of tornados, they are usually a visible condensation funnel. It has its end touching the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris. Most tornadoes travel at about 177 km/h or less, are 75 m wide, and will stop after traveling several kilometers. However, there are some can reach 480 km/h, stretch 1.6 km across, and last for more than 100 km.
