When fossil fuels are heated, they release energy that can produce electricity. Oil and gas are formed from ocean organisms' remains. It takes millions of years for organisms to be turned into fossil fuels. "Petroleum, natural gas, and coal are the main sources of energy for modern use" (Westbroek).
