Kia's mother had a difficult pregnancy giving birth in East General Hospital at 5:49 am weighing in at 7 pounds. The young nurse said, "Your baby is very healthy and has a wonderful sparkle in her green eyes." But no one replied. The nurse sadly and quietly whispered to the doctor, "She must be in shock or unconscious, she isn't replying." Sadly this was not the case; Kia's mother had died in child birth. Since little Kia had no other known relatives able to take care of her, the doctors at the hospital contacted Social Services who eventually decided that Kia and her two-year-old sister Nicole, were to be cared for in the Deep River orphanage.
