In the 19th century women did not have a lot to offer except, for their beauty and dowry which will get them to many places. They had to depend on these things to get them rich husbands; without it their chances of marrying a rich husband is low. In 19th century France, society put lots of importance in the social class, if you were poor in France, you will not be recognised socially, but if you were an aristocrat or middle- class, socially you would be well known.
