When the novel was written in 1817, the world was unbalanced. In England the industrial revolution was about to start. This meant that hundreds of workers were out of work. I think that Mary Shelley was trying to give the message that people should not be treated unfairly because of their appearance. When the book was written Mary Shelley was only 21. Her mother who was a feminist writer, which was unusual at the time, heavily influenced Mary Shelley.
