How does Mary Shelley explore the idea of being a 'monster' in Frankenstein? Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein, is one of the most well known gothic horror stories. Inspired by her own life and dreams, Shelley creates the being known as the monster. Throughout the novel, Mary Shelley explores the idea of being a monster through the characters of Elizabeth, Victor and the monster. Although Elizabeth is a minor character, she does portray some monster like characteristics. Elizabeth shows the theme of passive women, she sits calmly and helplessly awaiting Victors return. It is arguable that Shelley creates her female characters as so passive and subjects them to such ill treatment in order to show the obsession and destructive behaviour that Victor and the monster both portray.
