The image of dark and light are very important factors in the novel. The color of your skin, and the way you dress decide what where you fit in to society. The dark and light imagery appear many times throughout the novel, describing people, feelings and the characters surroundings. Marlow's profession is never specified. He comes to Europe to be the seaman. He has always enjoyed travel and exploration and seems to be obsessed with maps. He is the narrator of the novel after the first chapter.
