Analysis of The Character Kurtz in Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" Kurtz is a major character in Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness." Most of the information we learn about Kurtz's character is from other characters throughout the book. Although Kurtz does play a significant role in the book, his personality, major traits, and actions are revealed through stories and ideas given by different people we encounter throughout the book. The story was narrated by a man named Charlie Marlow who is in search of Marlow, and has taken on the challenge of finding him even though many have tried before him and never returned alive. Though his encounters with those who knew or idolized Kurtz, along with his actual meeting with the man, we are able to learn about Kurtz's personality. Kurtz was a wealthy man of influence.
