1) Steinbeck's first descriptions of George and Lennie illustrates to the readers that George is the adult in the partnership. On page 19 when Steinbeck is introducing the characters he says "they had walked in a single file down the path, and even in the open one stayed behind the other." This leads the readers to believe that Lennie's behaviour is like a child, since it's the way a child would follow his father. Steinbeck then describes the features of the two men which reveals a sharp contrast between their characters. At first he describes George: "the first man was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features" this tells us George is very alert, and since he has "restless eyes" it implies he's always on the look out and aware.
