Compare Mr Elton's proposal to Emma with Mr Knightley's Jane Austen's novel "Emma" was written in 1759 in the Augustan age. Social hierarchy was very important in this time and the character "Emma" was of a wealthy, upper class. The novel is set in rural England in a town called Highbury. The town of Highbury is located 18 miles away from London. In the 18th century, people did not marry just for love and usually married to maintain financial class and/or status. Despite this, women like Emma who were very wealthy did not have to marry and would maintain being seen as respectable if they did not. In the novel, Emma begins by not wanting to marry until she receives two contrasting proposals from Mr Elton and Mr Knightley. Emma is genteel and spends her time painting and reading. Match-making is another of Emma's hobbies, at the beginning of the novel...
