Marriage is a main theme in Pride and Prejudice. This can be seen by the opening lines of the novel, said by the omniscient narrator, "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." This opinion stated as a fact, was the typical attitude towards marriage held by the occupants of Regency England and can be seen as the attitude held by most of the characters in the novel, by their actions.
