Year 11 Coursework How does Brontė show the challenges faced by Jane Eyre in the 19th Century? Throughout the famous novel Jane Eyre, Miss Eyre encounters many life challenges, these of which adapt to the scene setting of the 19th Century period. To begin with, Jane Eyre faces a tough challenge at a young age when she is cast off by her relatives whom she had lived with for 5 unloving years. She was subjected to domestic tyranny from her cousin, who "abused" her and treated her like a "slave" as well as the neglection from her auntie who Jane Eyre describes as, "dependant and friendless". Jane Eyre was under the roof of Mrs Reed, who promised to treat Miss Eyre as she was her own child, however Jane accepted the reality of Mrs Reed's circumstances of her husbands death, and that it would be "irksome" to become the parent of...
