"Put the world to sleep" Example of Euphemism. This is used to highlight how horrific the situation was. Getting put to sleep sounds pleasant and calm but we know the reality of the extreme destruction the war caused on our world. * "Dead bodies piled on deck" The harsh repetition of the "D" sound emphasizes the brutality and harrowing nature of what had happened. Matter of fact tone suggests that the survivors have seen unimaginable horrors on a vast scale; they had become almost immune to death. This emphasises the brutality of the situation. "piled" shows that the bodies of the dead had been treated with a distinct lack of respect, each piled on
