In Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Nights Dream the quote "The course of true love ne'er runs smooth" is both true and false. Certain characters experience a smooth course of true love whilst for others the opposite is true. As far as Hippolyta and Theseus are concerned the course of true love has run quite smoothly. They are going to marry to stop a war so in that sense their marriage is a requirement, similar to the way that Egeus is going to make Hermia marry Demetrius. Because Hippolyta and Theseus' relationship appears to be working very well and they seem to have found out that they do actually love each other this causes the audience to question whether Egeus is actually correct.
