... What do you find interesting about the way A.S Byatt describes the scene in the church yard? You should consider characterization, language and anything else you find interesting. I found this passage very interesting to read, as it included so much sub-text. Byatt uses many literary techniques, such as personification, and metaphors, similes and onomatopoeias throughout this passage. They help create a distinct and vivid atmosphere, and entices the reader- reading this passage really made me want to read the book-the imagery used made me fell like I was in the middle of the graveyard watching these two men work. The two characters are very individual, it is obvious Cropper is in charge, he- as the expression goes is 'wearing the trousers'. Many things suggest this hierarchy to the reader, "Hilderbrand grunted", here we imagine Hilderbrand as a pig, an animal considered quite negative- repulsive to some.
