... In 'Mid-Term Break, Heaney writes about death and loss. Compare the way Clarke and the Pre 1914 poets write about death. 'The Field Mouse' by Gillian Clarke is about death and loss because it is about war. Thousands of people died and lots of families had to deal with the loss of their close ones. The war that was being talked about in the poem was a response to the fighting in Bosnia. This was happening in the 1990's. Gillian makes it obvious that the poem is about war, death and loss. She uses certain words and phrases that represent the war. The first image that the reader gets from this poem is sunny and warm. It starts with, 'summer'. This quotes sets the scene for the poem and it is talking about one of the terms that we have in the year. Summer is the warmest term in the year
