Larkin expresses nostalgia and loss in many of his poems. Referring to three or four poems, explore Larkin's presentation of this theme. 'To The Sea' also expresses nostalgia, but this time it shows Larkin taking a trip down memory lane to when he was a child at the beach. It begins with him stepping over a wall that divides the road from the beach, or metaphorically stepping back into his past. He uses sibilance to describe the colourful scene he finds himself in, 'the small hushed waves' gives a hint of the fall of the waves, and creates a calming quality to his writing. He lists the images in a cheerful way, giving the impression of a child's perspective.
