Why Study GCSE English Literature Poetry?

Poetry is the art of using language to create an effect. It doesn't have to tell a story or provide information, just move the reader. Whether it's the anger of Wilfred Owen, the grimness of Seamus Heaney or Andrew Marvell trying to seduce a girl poems can be gripping.

GCSE English Literature Poetry: What Will I Study?

Which poets and poems you study will depend on which exam syllabus you are taking. Most students will look at the work of a modern poet as well as poems from the Victorian period or before. Some of the poets like Shakespeare and Chaucer use English that may take a bit of understanding (and a good study guide). A lot of exam questions and coursework ask you to compare how poets have covered the same theme. You may have to analyse how a love poem from two hundred years ago is different to a modern one. Another common topic is war poetry, usually involving poems from World War One.

GCSE English Literature Poetry... What Can I Study Next?

If you enjoyed the poetry part of GCSE English Literature you could continue your studies at A Level or IB. At University level most literature degree courses should cover a range of poets and poems.

"The essay explores the use of bizarre sexual behaviour in love poety, especially in the poem 'Porphyria's Lover'. The essay looks at the different meanings behind some of the lines of the poem, and some interesting points are made - is Porphyria's lover murdering her or just playing a sexual game? There is a lot of language analysis, which is very informative and evidence is used for each point. Overall, this is an excellent analysis of the poem. TSR User: boosh_slayer"
