Cultural poverty can be defined as lacking societies principles in many ways. "The Wasp Factory" and "Saved" deal with dysfunctional families living in a society that is deprived of hope and aspiration. Their way of life is violent and gothic due to the deficiency of societies ethics and morals. This is reflected in the characters attitudes and minds which to them is all they have ever known. Their isolation from education and societies support structure detrimentally affects their ability to live in a community. Lack of education is probably the most defining factor in society as it determines how a society advances and improves.
