The Tempest Explored

About "The Tempest" by Shakespeare

"The Tempest" is one of Shakespeare's last plays and has an original plot (lots of his other plays were based on history or other people's stories). The story is set on an island ruled by Prospero, a magician. He causes a shipwreck to gain revenge on those who stole his lands and set him adrift in a boat.

Prospero has two magical servants Ariel and Caliban. Shakespeare uses the relationships of these three to talk about the themes of freedom and slavery. Some people think Shakespeare was commenting on the colonisation of America and the West Indies which was happening around the time "The Tempest" was written.

Unusually for Shakespeare there's no gory ending to this tale of revenge, there's a romantic wedding and a happy ending.

The Tempest: What Will I Study?

GCSE English Literature usually asks you to write essay type answers to questions set on extracts of the play. If you want to score high marks you'll need to know about the plot and characters in the whole play so you can show how the extracts fit in. The questions will ask you about the characters' relationships and actions. You should also think about how the play would be performed and what the audience's reaction might be.

You'll probably have to compare film versions of "The Tempest" as part of the GCSE syllabus. You may also enjoy "The Forbidden Planet" which uses the story of "The Tempest", but not the language, to create a science fiction film.

The Tempest... What Can I Study Next?

If you've enjoyed studying Shakespeare for GCSE then A Level English Literature should suit you. The A Level syllabus should include another of his plays.
