Have a little read: ... People tend to be shaped by their environment in which they live. How true do you think this is in relation to Shylock? Shylock is a Venetian moneylender. He is also a Jew. Unlike in today's society where different religions live side by side as normal, this was not the case in Shylock's day. In Venice, Jews were despised and shown no respect by Christians. Jews had often been pushed out of different countries and societies for many years before Shylock was even born. In 722 BC the first Jews were pushed out of Jerusalem and forced to move away. From then on Jews were never respected and were often called names and insulted, for this reason Shylock despises all Christians and especially Antonio. In Venice, the Jews are not allowed any other job, this means they must charge interest! Because of this Jews are hated by Christians. Shylock is one
