... How does Shakespeare present Katherina's transition from shrew to obedient wife? In Elizabethan times any woman who refused to submit to a man's authority, and therefore threaten his dominance, was considered to be a shrew. She would be seen as an outsider and deemed unattractive to both the sexes. Females were not to be independent, assertive or masterful, as British culture then associated this with masculinity. Instead, a model woman would be mild mannered, obedient and beautiful. Katherina becomes all of this only toward the end of the play. Meanwhile she remains the central character of the play, a shrew that is to be tamed. The Taming of the Shrew is a comedy. In it Shakespeare creates a world full of extraordinary and exaggerated situations, which contribute enormously to the humour and interest of the play. The audience are made to laugh from the very outset of the comedy and even more
