Romeo and Juliet Explored

About Romeo and Juliet

William Shakespeare wrote "Romeo and Juliet" sometime in the 1590s. He adapted the story from translations of Italian writers, borrowing the plot and expanding the roles of some of the minor characters. It was a big hit when first performed and has proved popular ever since. There have been hundreds of different productions (some with a happy ending!) and it has been adapted as an opera, ballet and several films. Why Study Romeo and Juliet?

"Romeo and Juliet" is on most exam boards short-list of Shakespeare plays for GCSE English Literature. It's a popular choice with teachers as it has a clear, dramatic story and enough violence and romance to appeal to students. "Romeo and Juliet" also has several excellent film versions available which fit in with the requirements of some exam syllabuses. Students can watch these to analyse how the play has been adapted by different directors.

If "Romeo and Juliet" has inspired you you could disobey your parents, have sword fights in the street and come to a tragic and romantic end. English Literature A Level is probably a safer choice though.
