The object is placed in the micrometer and the thimble turned until the spindle touches the object. The spindle and thimble gradually move along a V thread screw. The movement of the spindle is read of a scale, while the graduations on the thimble itself show small fractions of a revolution. Added together, the two figures give a highly accurate measurement.
