Macbeth Explored

About Macbeth.

First a warning. Actors consider it unlucky to say the name of the play in a theatre, often calling it "The Scottish Play" instead. Shakespeare is supposed to have used bits of real spells in the witches speeches which means the play is cursed. There are no reports of any GCSE English Literature students being affected by black magic though.

Shakespeare took the story of Macbeth from historical sources – some of the characters are based on real people in Scottish history. The play was probably written sometime between 1603 and 1607. It tells the tale of the violent struggle for the throne of Scotland.

Studying Shakespeare's Macbeth.

"Macbeth" is one of the most popular Shakespeare plays for GCSE English Literature. It covers themes of superstition, treachery and ambition. Common areas for coursework and exam questions include analysing the main characters' actions and speeches. For example, Lady Macbeth and her relationship with her husband is a popular topic.

Most GCSE English Literature students will have to consider how different directors have shown Macbeth on screen. This means watching film or TV adaptations. Additionally you may get to see a stage production of the play.

Shakespeare's Macbeth... What Can I Study Next?

If you've enjoyed "Macbeth", then taking an English Literature A Level should give you the opportunity to cover another of Shakespeare's plays. Most university courses in English literature will also involve studying Shakespeare.

If you've enjoyed the story and like Japanese films try "Throne of Blood" for a samurai version.

Recent Reviews of Macbeth Essays

What our users think of the Macbeth essays in this section:

"A good attempt at answering the main question, but improvements need to be made. An informative introduction, stating the ways in which Macbeth's character changes throughout the play. There is some explainations of the quotes, however some deeper language analysis needed - for example, when explaining the quote 'brave Macbeth', you simply state 'we know he is brave'. An ok conclusion, which sums up the points in the essay. Your essay is lacking slightly in length, and many of your points need to be expanded on. TSR User: boosh_slayer"

"Excellent introduction, summing up the theme of the essay. The opening few paragraphs of your essay are very well written and show that you have a deep understanding of the play. Some quotes have been used as evidence, which is key in any essay. Some of your sentances are very long, so you may want to think about making them everso slightly shorter in the future. Overall, this is a great piece of work, but is lacking in length. TSR User: boosh_slayer"
TSR
"A short, but fairly good piece of work. Good quotes have been used, and you have also made a reference to where they are in the play. Also, a very good conclusion, showing you have an understanding of the play and the two characters. You seem to be making some sort of conclusion about Lady Macbeth and the witches in the introduction, without any reasoning whatsoever. Also, your first paragraph is a little jumbled, and in the third line you discuss Lady Macbeth's death - which seems rather early in the essay. TSR User: boosh_slayer"

"Quite a good piece of work, discussing the character of Lady Macbeth and her role in the play. You have written a fairly good introduction, which sets up the essay nicely. Some interesting points have been made and they have been developed quite well. You have commented briefly on some language techniques that Shakespeare uses, which shows you have an understanding of the text. Also, you have included a very nice conclusion, summing up the essay. Some deeper language is needed, to gain a higher mark, personally. Overall, it lacks a little length, but you've covered numerous points regarding Lady Macbeth. TSR User: boosh_slayer"

"An excellent introduction, which introduces the play and contains some good historical background information. Your analysis of Macbeth's soliloquy is very detailed, and you have explored the meaning behind it and commented on some of the language . You've described some excellent stage direction, which would be very effective if it was to be performed. A short, but simple conclusion, outlining the main theme of the essay.
