William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright, who was widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. He was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England, in April 1564, the son of John Shakespeare, a successful glove maker and of Mary Arden, a daughter of the gentry. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer and part owner of a playing company. He appears to have retired to Stratford at around 1613, where he died three years later. Shakespeare wrote at least 37 plays and collaborated on several more.
