The play, written in 1599 was written at a time when Elizabeth was on the throne and mirrors the politics at the time. The play is based on some true facts taken from Plutarch's books. It is a story about a few of Julius' closest friends betraying him for what they thought was for the good of their country. When we look at the speeches of Antony and Brutus, they tell us a lot not only about the characters, but the play in itself.
