Julius Caesar Explored

About Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.

"Julius Caesar" was written by William Shakespeare around the year 1600. It is based on real people who lived in Rome around 44 BCE. Shakespeare has used historical sources, but has developed the story and characters to examine the themes of politics, power and treachery. The play isn't meant to be historically accurate; famously Cassius refers to a clock striking three - something that wouldn't be invented for another thousand years.

Why Study Shakespeare's Julius Caesar?

If you're doing GCSE English Literature then you'll have to study one of Shakespeare's plays. As the most famous writer in the world Shakespeare is seen as a master of the English language. You'll probably have to analyse speeches from the play and comment on how effective they are. Other common essay topics deal with the characters' motives and how they justify their actions. Coursework.info has lots of essays for GCSE English Literature if you're stuck for inspiration.

Shakespeare's version of the story of Caesar's life and death has been the subject of many films and TV productions. You'll probably get to watch and criticise some of these as part of a GCSE English Literature course.

Julius Caesar... What Comes Next?

If you've enjoyed the story of Julius Caesar you could learn more about the Roman world with GCSE or A Level Classics. Taking A Level English Literature should give you the chance to study another of Shakespeare's plays.

If you're lucky it'll be "Anthony and Cleopatra" where the story of Julius Caesar's assassins continues. If you're old enough to cope with the sex and violence the HBO television series "Rome" gives viewers a pretty realistic look at life during the events of "Julius Caesar".
