... What do we learn about the character Hamlet through his first soliloquy? Shakespeare uses soliloquy so Hamlet can share with the audience feelings he would not vocalize in public. As this is also our first major opportunity to form our impressions of Hamlet, his personality and nature are strongly reflected in this particular section of the text, almost as an introduction. We can, therefore, note and study this first soliloquy to reveal the hero of the play in his truest colours and observe his true frame of mind. This can be observed through his language and imagery. The irrational tempo of the words: 'how weary, stale, flat and unprofitable,' (line 133), shows his weariness. This speech contrasts dramatically with Claudius' eloquence. The verse starts and stops, punctuated by expressions of pain and confusion. This disjointed rhythm and dislocated progress of Hamlet's thoughts convey to us his inner turmoil.
